Laser Technology Provides a Softer Touch for Soft Tissue

If you have bleeding gums, you’re not alone. The earliest stage of gum disease can be effectively treated with proper oral hygiene and laser gingivitis treatment. Although gum disease is the leading cause of bleeding gums and tooth loss in adults, multiple studies show a strong correlation between periodontitis and systemic health. Advanced periodontal disease is associated with worsening symptoms in people with diabetes, respiratory disease, and heart disease, and research suggests it raises the risk of preterm births, Alzheimer’s disease, and kidney, pancreatic, and blood cancers in men.

Periodontal therapy aims to reverse gum disease and prevent more severe repercussions, including bacterial infections, bone and tooth loss, and systemic health problems. At Dental Specialist & Implant Center, our caring periodontist believes in healing through natural methods whenever possible. Laser gum disease treatment in The Woodlands, TX, fits in perfectly with our holistic dentistry philosophy to deliver compassionate dental care that considers your whole body’s health. Dr. Adriana Wells uses lasers to gently improve oral health with other methods that reduce discomfort and downtime, enabling you to feel like yourself again in less time!

1

Scaling and Root Planing

This non-surgical, two-part deep cleaning is typically the first-line gum disease treatment in The Woodlands, TX. First, Dr. Wells removes tartar, plaque, and bacteria from the root surfaces of teeth below the gumline. Then, the root surfaces are smoothed out to prevent bacteria from building up again and help your gums reattach snugly to your teeth.

2

Periodontal Care (Maintenance)

In addition to routine semi-annual cleanings from our hygienist, gum disease may necessitate a deeper cleaning at the Dental Specialist & Implant Center. Our periodontist may recommend periodontal maintenance visits after scaling and root planing, usually every three to four months. Removing tartar buildup removes the dangerous bacterial growth that occurs with periodontal disease and helps keep your soft tissue healthy.

3

Gum Disease

Lasers can distinguish between healthy and diseased tissue because diseased tissue is generally darker. They are set to specific wavelengths to sterilize harmful bacteria while removing diseased gum tissue.

By eradicating harmful bacteria and eliminating infection, your gums can heal, regenerate, and tighten back up around your teeth. Lasers are effective for all stages of gum disease, including advanced periodontitis treatment in The Woodlands, TX.

4

Gingival (Gum) Grafting

Also called gingival grafting, this procedure involves carefully placing a small amount of new tissue in an area with inadequate gum tissue. This is done to prevent worsening gum recession or to cover exposed tooth root surfaces. While donor tissue can come from various sources, it’s frequently taken from the palate (roof of your mouth).

After the grafting procedure is completed, new blood vessels grow into the graft and help it integrate with the surrounding soft tissue. Sometimes, lasers can regenerate new gum tissue instead of traditional grafting.

5

Gum Depigmentation

Excess melanin can build up in gums tissue, making them look brown or black instead of pink. Laser gum depigmentation is a cosmetic periodontal procedure that vaporizes and removes a thin top layer of gum tissue, thereby destroying the cells that produce melanin. As new tissue is created during healing, it tends to be pink rather than brown. Sometimes, it may take several sessions to achieve the desired degree of lightening.
