Pre-operative instructions

The following instructions may be helpful when preparing for your upcoming surgery. Please call if you have any last-minute questions. We can be reached at Lillian C Lyons – Dental Specialists & Implant Center at The Woodlands Phone Number 936-231-8937 during regular business hours.

For your convenience, have your antibiotics and pain medications filled prior to your scheduled surgery, unless they have been previously phoned into the pharmacy of your choice. Please bring your filled prescriptions with you to your appointment.

It may be important to stop taking aspirin and non-steroidals such as Motrin and Advil, 7-10 days prior to your surgery. If you are taking Coumadin or another blood thinner, remember to discontinue them as directed. If you take antibiotic premed, please take it as directed before your surgery. You will feel better if you have eaten prior to surgery. We keep the office cool, so dress warmly. You may bring your smartphone or tablet that enables you to listen to music with you if you like.

In order to evaluate your progress and healing, we will see you for post-operative checks during the first one to five weeks. In most cases, we will also see you for periodontal maintenance cleaning and examination of tissue maturation about eight to 12 weeks following the surgery.

Antibiotics

Please alert the office to any allergies or sensitivities that you might have to antibiotics. You will be prescribed an antibiotic if our doctors determine it to be necessary. Take as directed until gone. It is advisable not to take these medications on an empty stomach, as nausea may result. For women taking birth control pills, be advised that antibiotics may interfere with their effectiveness.

Sedatives

If you elect to use one of the following oral sedatives you must have a ride to and from the office. Please bring your remaining tablets with you. Remember, we encourage you to eat prior to your surgery.

The use of other sedatives or sleeping aids that you have been prescribed by other doctors must be discussed with your doctors before the day of the procedure. These sedatives include:

  • Ativan (Lorazepam)
  • Valium (Diazepam)
  • Triazalam (Halcion)

Cleaning the Treated Area & Food Suggestions

Avoid using your electric toothbrush or a water pick, if you regularly use them, to clean the area treated during the first days after your surgery. A toothbrush with very soft bristles or a gauze may be used gently to remove bacterial plaque and food deposits at the treated area. The rest of your mouth (the non treated areas) can be cleaned as normal.

Practicing good oral hygiene is very important for the surgery to produce great results and promote satisfactory healing. Additional post-op information will be given to you at time of pre-surgical appointment.

Good nutrition is crucial during your healing time. When preparing a post-op menu, please consider some of the following choices:

  • Jell-O
  • Bananas
  • Yogurt
  • Pasta
  • Milk Shakes
  • Casseroles
